The battle of Chirokitia 1426 A.D.

Under Janus I reign Cyprus was the base of several pirates operating in easterm Mediterranean against egyptian sea traffic.

Janus I had repeated discussions with the Sultan of Egypt via the Sultan's representatives. Janus was not able to stop those raids and that gave the Muslim reason to attack Cyprus.

After having sent several small forces to raid Cyprus, Baybar the Sultan of Egypt, in 1426 decide to launch a large scale attack versus the island. Once the mameluks landed, Janus I mustered the army and called for help to some european states, but none arrived.

On 7 july 1426 the two armies met and the Cypriots were defeated. Janus I was taken prisoner. Cyprus underwent revolts and internal turmoil, and became a mameluk vassal, ceasing to be a thorn in its side.
