In this game I got myself confused over the name of my opponent. The board said
Luca Rosin but someone told me it was Stefano.
Whatever it is, a giant of a man with a heart to go with it.
We had an excellent game.
I invaded, he put a Waterway down the right hand side of the board. I put 2 bits
of rough going down. Only 1 of which mattered in game because it was on the
opposite flank from the waterway but in the NKE deployment zone. (Not light
zone).
The NKE deployed working from left to right, where his left is the waterway.
A mixed command of Ps then BdF,Bw,CvS chariots. Then another similar command.
Then a third command but interrupted by the rough going which only had a couple
of Ps in and forward and to the right of the rough going some Cv Chariots.
Command 4 was Flank Marching.
My army set up in its std formation.
Red and Blue strike commands either side of the white anchor aiming straight for
a fight all along the line. Green behind and on the left open flank.
The plan was simple, attack all along the line and kill the mushy infantry bits
to get onto the flanks of the dangerous CvS chariots. Green command to hold up
anything unexpected that comes on the open flank or re inforce the attack on
said flank.
So plans set and game good to go when my very excellent opponent pulls out a
bottle of the finest extra fine dry white wine as good as any French champagne.
Over the course of the game we saw off two of these bottles although probably on
a sixty forty split to my host. Second breakfast indeed.
Anyway, I digress.
It turns out the NKE is inert and I have first move. We move as fast as we can
forward with a screen of green wheeling to face off the open flank where I
suspected something was still to come.
The NKE then burnt most of their pips but advanced the chariots forward of the
scrub to threaten the flank of my left hand attack command. Shortly following
that his flank command came on. It was relatively small 4 Cvchariots 2 BdF and
2Bw if I recall correctly.
Meanwhile the NKE braced and I attacked all along the line. Inconclusive first
couple of attacks, my BdF making hard work of clearing some Ps. So I reinforced
my right hand attack with my Ps and the Bd created the overlaps for some Ps on
Ps action. A mixture of kills, repulses and spents, pushed away the vital flank
support of the NKE chariots but it was still slow going. On my left flank I was
able to exploit the bit of scrub and overpower the Ps that where in there which
meant I was able to start rolling that flank up and get some flank locks. At the
same time I decided instead of fighting off his flank march that I would
sacrifice half a dozen Ps instead but reckoned they would give me 3 bounds grace
to use all my pips attacking the commands that had damage on them.
This was the right decision as his big command near the scrub where I had got
round the flank and into the rear Broke which disheartened his next biggest
command that I was just getting into and came just short of disheartening his
middle command as well.
Time was called for us to complete the pair of bounds we where in just as we had
started combat but during that combat enough NKE died to break a second command
and dishearten the 3rd which broke the NKE army. I had lost 9ME in the process,
not 10 per cent so 25 to me.
The NKE put up a sterling fight for longer than they should have but my
opponents inexperience in terms of deployment played a vital part to the game.
With a static defence such as he had, I don't think he should have flank marched
and those vital chariots could have replaced infantry or Ps that he had in the
front line. Of course it is easy to be smart after the fact and that is only my
opinion.
So a splendid game and splendid opponent, despite the score it was still hard
fought for.

cheers
